How does rage co op work

The cooperative are just another missions away from the storyline, with no inventory, no crafting, no money, no lvling. I thought it was going to be like Borderlands, since they copy cat everything about it, but they forgot to copy cat the reason why Borderlands is so succesfull.

Are you co-op exclusive? That would be somewhat limiting I would think. The game is not even close to ruined.. So, please tell me exactly how it's ruined.
